WALKING CRICKET TASTER SESSION
Do you ever look back on your younger sporting days, and wish you could re-live those golden moments? Or perhaps you’ve never been very sporty, but you’ve often watched others experience the camaraderie of being part of a team and felt a little envious? Or maybe you’re recovering from an accident or illness and have been encouraged to exercise more, but just don’t feel very motivated and have no idea how to get started?
Yes, you’ve got a few more years behind you now. Yes, you’ve got a few more aches and pains to commiserate about. But that doesn’t have to stop you enjoying the physical, mental and social boost walking sports can bring.
Staying active as you get older can help you live a happier and healthier life, as exercise is proven to do all kinds of good things for your body and mind – from decreasing cholesterol and preventing osteoporosis to reducing stress and helping with the onset of dementia.
Walking sports are a fun way to keep your energy up, make new friends, and look after your health. And after a session, it will be the best tasting slice of cake and a cuppa with friends that you’ll have all week!
WALKING CRICKET
Walking Cricket is the sport you love, just played at a slower pace – so it’s perfect for people who are older, or less physically able, but who still want to enjoy the thrill of the game. The can be played as teams or in pairs. Everything is walking, including the ‘runs’ and fielding, and a match lasts about an hour. A soft ball is also used.
WHY PLAY WALKING CRICKET?
Whether you’re batting, bowling, or fielding, it’s a great form of cardio exercise. Plus it improves both agility and hand-eye coordination. If you ever enjoyed playing rounders at school, you’ll love a game of Walking Cricket. Get a group of guys and gals together, as Walking Cricket is a very social sport, filled with team spirit and fun.
BOOK YOUR PLACE ON THE WALKING CRICKET SESSION
On Monday 10th January from 10am – 12.30pm we have a walking cricket taster session at Blackbrook Leisure Centre, Taunton, TA1 2RW. If you would like to join us and book a place, please complete this booking form

The North Taunton Woolaway Project have been working with the Quantock Landscape Partnership Scheme, who are kindly facilitating some community artwork on the hoardings around the NTWP.
On Saturday 22nd May, a group of community members took a trip to the Quantock Hills to take some inspiration from nature for the artwork on the hoarding. Luckily the weather turned out to be beautiful and stayed dry for the trip.
We have plenty of inspiration now and the artist working with us on this project is Dave Bain. Dave has created some designs that reflect the feedback he received from you all and the designs will capture some of the key themes.
Over the next three weekends, QLPS & NTWP representatives will be on site to begin bringing the designs to life, so we’re going to need your help.
Absolutely no experience is required, just some enthusiasm and some old clothes and you can come along for as long or as little as you like to help us paint the designs.
Please find all the details below;
Saturday 29th & Sunday 30th May – 10am to 5pm – Bodmin Road
Saturday 5th & Sunday 6th June – 10am to 5pm – Dorchester Road (opposite The Wagon)
Saturday 12th & Sunday 13th June – 10am to 5pm – Cambridge Terrace

Taunton is set to be transformed into a giant game thanks to National Lottery funding from Sport England
An innovative physical activity game that has engaged more than a million people is set to launch in Taunton.
The Beat the Street game will take place in Taunton from 16th June to 14th July thanks to a National Lottery grant from Sport England.
Beat the Street encourages people to get outside and to get active and is open to anyone of any age who would like to take part. The game works by turning the town into a real-life game and residents will soon start to see special sensors called Beat Boxes appearing on lampposts around the area.
Prior to the game, primary school pupils from participating schools will be provided with fobs while parents and teachers will receive a card from the school so they can accompany children. The wider community can pick up a free contactless card from a distribution point listed on the website https://www.beatthestreet.me/taunton/
Players join a school or community team, or you can set up your own with a minimum of 6 players. Players then walk, run, scoot, wheel, or cycle between the 37 Beat Boxes which are spaced half a mile apart – tapping the fobs or cards as they go. The further players travel, the more points they score.
Beat the Street was created by Dr William Bird MBE, an expert in physical activity and the founder of Intelligent Health.
He said: “The Beat the Street game has been designed to encourage communities to incorporate lasting changes into their daily lives that will greatly improve their physical and mental health. It also helps reduce congestion and air pollution, improves community cohesion and encourages families to explore the area’s green spaces.
“We know that some people will feel a little uneasy about getting back outside again while we are still living with Covid-19. However, the pandemic has shown us that now, more than ever, it is vitally important to ensure that we adopt healthy lifestyle habits around incorporating physical activity into our days and trying to travel in more active ways by walking or cycling. There has been discussion about a second wave of Covid-19 and if this does happen, one of the best ways we can prepare for it is to get our bodies ready by building the immune system through physical activity. We are so grateful for this National Lottery funding from Sport England which is enabling us to reach more and more people through Beat the Street.”
Jane Knowles, Somerset Activity and Sports Partnership CEO said: “The outbreak of Covid-19 and subsequent lockdown has been difficult for many of us, but one small silver lining is that it has given us a unique opportunity to think about the way we do things and perhaps reset our way of life; such as ditching the car and walking and cycling more, taking more notice of nature and realising the importance of community. We can’t wait to see how far the town can travel together.”
According to research, one in four people in England does less than 30 minutes of physical activity a week, which classes them as inactive. Four out of five primary school children do not get the recommended amount of daily exercise of 60 minutes a day.
The game will be jointly run by Somerset Activity and Sports Partnership (SASP), Somerset County Council and Somerset West and Taunton Council.
The National Lottery funding from Sport England will not only help people in Taunton to get active, but also to leave a positive legacy to improve the community’s health and wellbeing.
For more information on updates on the game, please click onto www.beatthestreet.me/taunton/ or follow ‘Beat the Street Taunton’ on Facebook and follow @SASPsomerset on twitter and sasp_somerset on Instagram.

Don’t forget to let Jon from Quantock Landscape Partnership Scheme know if you would like to join the free trip to the Quantocks on Saturday leaving at 9.30 am from the bus stop on Dorchester Road opposite Priorswood shops.
You’ll need to wear an appropriate jacket and footwear and bear in mind that trainers are likely to get muddy. You should bring some water with you and any snacks but you’ll be back in time for lunch.
It is planned to visit Dead Woman’s Ditch where there is plenty of woodland cover, but the length of the trip may need to be revised if the weather is truly awful.
Everyone’s invited who lives on the NTWP estate so if you have children bring them along to get out and enjoy the countryside or come on your own.
Please book your space by clicking here https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/community-mural-trip-to-quantock-hills-tickets-154249890575

We need your input.
Throughout this pandemic we have been supporting our local community in many ways, some with just offering the free book service, others with Christmas boxes, signposting and some with more support but we now need your help by completing a short survey which will form part of a report to our funders.
We have been lucky enough to have received grants throughout the pandemic which have enabled us to carry on and support residents of North Taunton also in paying overheads on the community centre such as utilities and wage costs even through our staff have been placed on furlough at various times throughout the pandemic.
These grants have secured the future of the community centre so please put a little back by completing the survey and also ask family and friends to do the same.

The survey runs from the 26th April to the 29th of May.
Many thanks for supporting us

All of us at the Community Centre know the benefits of being outdoors and have had some fantastic team training days at Young Wood with the Neroche Woodlanders. They are now offering some sessions aimed at those on low incomes or who have lost work during the pandemic.

PRIORSWOOD COMMUNITY CENTRE OPENING UPDATE
We appreciate everyone is desperate for the Community Centre to reopen as are we.
While Government regulations state Community Centres can reopen as from the 12th of April this is to support vulnerable individuals and not for serving teas and coffees inside a building, all hospitality venues can only serve drinks outside until the next restrictions are lifted in May and all covid regulations will still have to be abided by as in masks worn unless eating/drinking and everyone will have to still socially distance with markers at 2 meters.
Once we have a date you will be the first to know.
We will be back with you as soon as safely possible.
