DIAMOND JUBILEE GARDEN PROJECT

The Jubilee Garden was opened on 2nd June 2012
and it is lovely to see it being used by so many people.

The Jubilee Garden is a project that has been undertaken by the North
Taunton Partnership, the charity that oversees the day to day running of the Priorswood Community Centre.

The Community Centre have been issued with a lease for the garden area by Taunton Deane Borough Council who have granted us full use, the Council have not funded the project it is totally a community initiative.

What was here before our project began

All the funding for the garden has been granted through the Community Centre by The Big Lottery and St Modwen, with Parsons Landscaping winning the contract to provide the landscaping, they will also be responsible for the upkeep for 12 months from completion of the installation, after this date the Community Centre will then take on the upkeep through our newly formed gardening club who meet the 2nd Thursday in the month.

Work Begins

We carried out an initial consultation with local shopkeepers, residents, schools, churches and Community Centre users to gauge the support for such a project, we received only one negative response from over 200 questioned, from this consultation period we have made various changes to the proposed plans to fit in with the many and varied requests and suggestions, from this we have made the garden totally accessible, with better access for the Community Centre, disabled toilet and the hairdressers.

The Garden Takes Shape

Selworthy School have designed hand printed tiles of every child in the school, The Academy designed and made the mosaics laid in the path, Sky College students are making a mosaic for the wall of the Community Centre and a local artist has designed and made the sculpture as a focal point for the garden.

Finished

We feel that this is a positive addition to the area making it more attractive and friendly, offering seating and a calm and reflective space for local residents to rest socialise and enjoy watching the garden grow and change with the seasons. The whole area is covered by CCTV and will be closely looked after by the volunteers and staff from the Community Centre, if you have any concerns or questions you would like answered please feel free to pop in or ring 353643 or email; lesley.priorswoodcc@yahoo.co.uk.
